ONE VIEW OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PASTICHE AND PARODY

In the theoretical discussions about the postmodernist literature, there is a disagreement as to the question whether the dominant mode of its relation to the tradition is pastiche or parody. This leads us, leaving postmodernism aside, also to the question of the relationship, in principle, between the phenomena of pastiche and parody. In this paper, after a brief examination of such debates, we analyze the techniques of pastiche and parody as they are applied in the novels of two Serbian authors: Danilo Kiš, A Tomb for Boris Davidovich; and, Svetislav Basara, The Fuss about Cyclists. Then we contrast the places where there are in tertextual links between the two novels, with the aim of proving the point from the first part of our paper: that pastiche is a subtype of parody.
