WE/I AND THE OTHERS IN LJUBOMIR NENADOVIĆ’S LETTERS FROM GERMANY
MODERNIZATION IN DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY OF THE MAIN CHARACTER

The aim of the paper is to draw attention to the changes that are taking place in constructing the collective and individual identity of Ljubomir Nenadović as itinerary writer in Letters from Germany. We shall try to detect all the relevant elements ranging from the complex amalgam comprised of the Slovenian, German, and specifically cosmopolitan cultural identity up to the distinctly pronounced individual identity of a modern, skeptical and disappointed intellectual toward the end of the 19th century. By analyzing the motivation and the conceptual grounds for building the main character as such and his relationship toward the others, we shall emphasize the elements the anticipatory role of Nenadović’s writing is based upon in constituting a prototype of a modern hero.
