THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE HARMONIC AND THE MELODIC LEVEL, FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THEMATISM, IN THE FIRST SYMPHONY BY GUSTAV MAHLER
Keywords:
Gustav Mahler, tonality, symphony, harmonicsAbstract
Although it stands chronologically at the very beginning of his work, Gustav Mahler’s First Symphony is a very significant achievement, from the point of view of his individual style and as part of the general evolution of symphony in Romanticism. By analyzing one of its crucial aspects, the harmonic language, we make an essential step towards the understanding the work as a whole. For this reason, this paper concentrates on the analysis of Mahler’s harmonics. Within such discourse, the paper will attempt to reveal the relationship between harmonic and melodic components, especially harmonic features of the mes and polyphonic treatment of melody in a framework of stabilized tonality. Enclosed examples from the score bring the majority of relevant subjects, the main ones and the episodic ones also. We also examine the enormously signi ficant and constructive role of the purefourths interval in the construction of the pivotal thematic materials, and in the securing of the tonality itself.
