Abstract

The class conflict in the novel The White Tiger should not be viewed one-sidedly, and this paper attempts to represent different aspects of the class struggle as represented in the novel, especially the way in which social classes potentially overlap and merge one into the other. Likewise, this paper deals with the process of transition of value judgements in the protagonist Balram Halwai, deals with his alternating moral judgements, and the way in which his class conscience is changing due to the struggle against poverty and repression imposed on him by his masters. The White Tiger represents a signigicant study of class differences in India, and the novel is rewarding in terms of examining the nature and contradictions of the inevitable conflict between different classes within the Indian society.
