GENDER-SPECIFIC LEXEMES DENOTING OCCUPATIONS, FUNCTIONS AND TITLES IN THE SERBIAN LANGUAGE

This study has been prompted by the public disagreement in the Serbian society in relation to use and potential standardisation of gender-lexicalised names for occupations, functions and titles in the Serbian language. Owing to the fact that tendencies in language behaviour may be predicted on the basis of attitudes, the main aim of the study is to determine the general participants’ attitude towards the matter at issue, as well as to determine the most frequent qualifiers in terms of (not) using these lexemes. Thirty speakers of Serbian have been recruited for the study, with an even distribution of females and males, of different level of education, and from different geographical regions. The participants were tested via semistructured interview, and the gathered data were analysed by means of qualitative analysis. The most important conclusions are that males mainly have more moderate attitudes towards the issue in question, as well as that the majority of the participants belong to the standard language culture. The participants perceive language changes as illegitimate and unacceptable because these changes are regarded as errors in the language which represents the cultural heritage of the Serbian people.
