Abstract

Within humanities, the Italian language falls into a broader category of languages for special purposes, which could be understood as particular varieties of the use of language within scientific and professional contexts. One of its main traits is a rich and evolving lexicon which draws upon general Italian and its derivative and compositive mechanisms to create terms for ideas, concepts, models and processes in a unique and well-based manner. Some formative elements are borrowed from Latin, whereas an important role is played by the loan words imported from English, as well as other European languages. The purpose of this study was to take a preliminary look into the nature and prospects of a specialized lexis used within the humanities. The first results of our qualitative research conducted with the help of a small learning corpus of specialized texts has shown that the humanities lexicon is neither monoreferential nor stable or unanimous as is the case of some of the lexicons pertaining to hard sciences. It is mostly determined by the context and constantly revised and negotiated.
