Abstract

This paper describes the procedure of shaping the picture of a modern city in the poetry of Novica Tadić. The urban microcosm is disintegrated into the city square, street, park, quay, dump and house space so as to activate meaning potentials and symbolic possibilities of each segment of space. The vertical axis in space organization affects the evaluation of the city as the lower, devilish world and the meeting place of demonic forces, which points to the influence of folklore heritage as well as to the similarity with city depictions in certain poems by Momčilo Nastasijević. Alone amongst the people who lost their divine direction and the metaphysical point of their movement, the lyrical subject recognizes evil in almost every item of urban surroundings. The evil makes him feel anguished, constantly afraid, existentially endangered and powerless in preserving his own integrity.
