The paper analyses basic realisations of free indirect speech (FID) in English and Serbian in the examples excerpted from the corpus in English and its translational equivalents in Serbian. Additionally, the paper points out some possible interpretative and translational problems which may occur due to the ambiguity and vagueness which may occur when FID is used. The aim is also to provide a brief account of the overlaps which can be found when using FID in the two languages, and to investigate terminological and methodological issues in relation to these to phenomena.
