BETWEEN THE PARALLEL AND CONTRASTING PERIOD
A PROPOSAL FOR A TYPOLOGY OF PERIODS ACCORDING TO THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE THEMATIC PLAN

Speaking of characteristics of the thematic scheme of a musical period, consensual interpretations can be found in theoretical literature. If the sentences are mutually similar, we speak about the parallel period (according to the Anglo-Saxon music theory) or the period of repetitive structure texture (according to the Russian music theory). In cases in which the second sentence does not show a higher degree of similarity to the first one, the term contrasting period is used (Anglo-Saxon literature), i.e. the period in which the sentences are not thematically similar (Russian school). Though seemingly thematically different, some sentences of this type reveal similarities in certain components (the structure, the rhythm, or the texture). In this paper, we will try to make a clear distinction between a high degree of thematic sentence similarities, existence of some mutual elements and absence of mutual elements in the thematic scheme within a period.
