Keywords:

In this paper the author observes intertextual relations between David Albahari`s novel Bait (1996) and “Letters from the Camp” published in the book of essays Burden (2004). The focal point of the study is the analysis of the approach that Albahari employs in order to interpolate documents into the novel, which in the context of theory of quotation manifests through the usage of allusions, pseudoquotations, as well as explicit intertextuality. The paper will examine the function of quoting on the given example (autoreference), along with the dialogue-like treatment of the subtext. The conclusion will reveal that the methods used in “Letters from the Camp” have significantly influenced the construction of the thematic and motific framework of the novel Bait (e.g. the motif of a mother`s guilt, the question of identity, the archetype of a persecuted Jew).
